You Only Get Three

Finance Twitter has had a wonderful collection of posts from people about what they have learned and experienced over the last year and decade. Michael Batnick had one of my favorites. Andrew Miller had a great one about the concepts he has learned about. And the Adventur.es annual letter is always a great read.

All of this accomplishment can be very inspiring. Your mind starts racing, thinking of all the things you want to start and accomplish next year. You will find no shortage of ideas. But if you want to avoid the disappointment that usually comes with this type of inspiration, you need to keep your list small.

I am reading Bob Iger’s new book, The Ride of a Lifetime. Its very well written and full of interesting lessons and stories. The quote above is from a political consultant talking to Bob Iger as he is about to start his campaign to be the new CEO of Disney after Michael Eisner leaves. Bob Iger begins listing all of these new ideas and strategies on how he is going to improve Disney. The political consultant tells him he has to focus on three priorities.

As we transition from reflection to action, we all could do well to heed this advice. Figure out what your priorities, develop a plan to execute, and stay focused. Brent Beshore’s tweet perfectly summarizes this idea.

Take advantage of this quite time to relax, reflect, and prioritize. The 2020’s is going to be one heck of a decade.
